The shortlisted entries for the 2017 NZ Book Festival Manuscript Competition has been decided!Vintage telephone depicting announcement of shortlisted entries for manuscript competition

The range and calibre of entries exceeded all expectations, making the selection of a top 10 an exciting and challenging process for those involved.

However, these 10 stood out for a number of reasons, including  things like originality of storyline, depth of characters, how easy it was to visualise the settings and situations  portrayed, their appeal to a clearly defined audience and the skill in which the authors crafted the sample chapters to draw the reader in. All 10 of the shortlisted entries received the feedback from the selection panel that they wanted to keep reading.

Titles selected for the shortlist, in no particular order, are:

Sons of Orpheus

Aro Street Girls

Bright Moon Ridge

Wrens Under the Radar

Pockets of Gold

Frozen in a Flash

I Have Showed Thee All Things

Follow Me In

Meltwater

Mix Tape

Please note that the names of the authors will not be made public until the overall winner is decided at the start of July. This is to preserve the anonymity for judging.

Feedback for all competition entries

BigWords-Books would like to thank all authors who entered the competition in its inaugural year, and encourage you to keep writing, as there is clear potential in each and every one of you.

The purpose of the competition was to inspire more New Zealand writers to consider the indie-publishing route for their work. Submitting your stories was just the beginning: we want to help you to continue your journey in whatever way we can.

BigWords-Books will be sending each author who entered a collated document with feedback from the selection panel, and some professional recommendations for what to do next. You will also receive a special offer from  key sponsors, Book Print.

Please allow time for us to put together your feedback. This competition is run solely by volunteers with a passion for supporting independent publishing in New Zealand.
